Junior Development ProgramSM

Mercy HealthPlex, as part of the Midtown family, offers a variety of programs designed for junior tennis players ages 3-18.  The USTA (United States Tennis Association) has recognized Midtown as a pioneer in the field of 10 and Under Tennis, and an industry leader in adapting to the needs of younger players, helping them develop their playing skills.

Our Junior Development PathwaySM offers a systematic and progressive approach to tennis excellence. Structured around effective growth and development principles, players move at their own pace based on their ability, improvement and commitment. Every level of the program has a simple set of objectives, and our pros make your child achieving each goal their priority. And as a parent, you can trust that we will apprise you of your child’s progress as they advance through the Junior Development PathwaySM.

LEVEL 7 (Red-Foam Balls, Mini Court) AGES 4 - 5
Introduce your child to Mercy HealthPlex’s Tennis Program.  Children develop their general motor and athletic skills.  The program focuses on training coordination, movement, and balance skills as well as sending and receiving skills that develop the ability to rally.  Games are an important part of the program and the children are exposed to games that are fun and tennis related on a mini court.

LEVEL 6 (Red-Foam Balls, Mini Court) AGES 6 - 9
This program incorporates movement, balance, coordination and motor skill development with a focus on self and partner rallying skills on the mini court.  Both reception and projection activities are emphasized.  Children learn the first stages of cooperative tennis while learning how to initiate a rally, move and judge a ball (reception and centering skills), control the racquet at the contact point and control the height, direction and depth to be successful on the mini court.  They learn adaptive skills that are the foundation of their future tennis development.

LEVEL 5 (Red-Foam Ball, Mini Court) AGES 6 - 11
Players in this level will have an understanding of the game and start to compete both on teams and in some simple individual events.  Players will work on coordinated movements in different directions, better body control, longer stroke shapes and consistent point of contact. Rallying from the baseline of the mini court and directing the ball along with coordinated use of the arms on a serves motion will also emphasized.  Players also work on scoring and rules of the game.

LEVEL 4 (Orange Balls, 60’ Court) AGES 7 – 12
Players will be making the transition from the 36’ court to the 60’ court.  Some skills will be repeated from the previous levels and players will compete in team events and individual challenges. Players will work on moving quickly and efficiently with good balance, coordinating rotations, and use of both arms together. We will also focus on swing shapes, spin, rallying from the 60’ court and serving on balance with a consistent action and higher contact.

LEVEL 3 (Orange Ball, 60’ Court) AGES 7 - 12
At this level players should be confident and comfortable competing on a 60’ court, both in team and individual events.  Players will work on using specific patterns, adapting movement, and quick reaction. We will also focus on refining the stoke shape, use of spin, changing the stroke to direct the ball and hit to different depths as well as start to use a effective throwing action and grip on the serve.  Players will become more tactically aware of the opponent.

LEVEL 2 (Green Balls, 78’ Court) AGES 8 - 14
Players will be making the transition to the full size court and a mixture of balls will be used to help the process.  Players will work on coordinating to, from, and around the ball, smooth coordinated use of all body parts, adapting stances and techniques based upon the attended shot, varying and changing the flight, spin and speed of the ball. Focus will also be placed on refining serve techniques and the use of spin on the second serve, as well as developing a tactical game plan around attacking and defending.

TEEN 1 AND TEEN 2 (Red, Orange, Green and Yellow Balls) AGES 11 – 18
Teen 1 program is for teenagers who are relatively new to tennis.  Learning to rally and play is the theme of each class.  The students are exposed to all the basic skills of tennis including ground strokes, volleys, overheads and serves.  The class stresses cooperation and competition in many of the drills and play situations.

Teen 2 students experience the five play situations and refine their tactical/technical skills.  Concepts of offense/defense are introduced in both singles and doubles.  Ball control exercises that enhance consistency, direction, depth and spin are stressed.  A variety of adaptive skills are trained using dead ball drills, live ball drills and competitive play situations in all areas of the court.

Junior Competition Programs

The Junior Competition Program is designed for more serious players. The program stresses mental discipline, conditioning and refining racquet skills. Match play performance improves with on-court coaching. Admittance into the program is based on playing performance and past tournament record or ranking.
