What are the requirements to volunteer?

Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, complete an application and Health Clearance Form, pass a background check, go through a successful interview process and attend a hospital orientation. Volunteer applications must be completed in full for consideration to volunteer.

How do I get started?

Fill out the volunteer application. Our program is rewarding, but demands a significant service-based commitment on your part. Please carefully consider your schedule and your ability to commit your time.

What is my time commitment?

We ask all of our volunteers to commit to a minimum of 50 hours of service to ensure continuity of our services to patients, residents and visitors. Regular schedules are established according to individual department needs. Volunteers are asked to manage their schedules according to hospital or facility requirements. The average schedule for a volunteer is eight or fewer hours per week. Volunteers cannot work a 40-hour work week.

I only need 20 hours of community service. Can I fulfill this requirement at a Mercy Health hospital or facility?

Our minimum requirement is 50 hours of service. We do not provide references or write letters of recommendation until the minimum of 50 hours of commitment is met.

I have been ordered by a court to do community service. Can I fulfill this requirement at a Mercy Health hospital or facility?

No. We do not accept volunteers completing court-ordered service.

What kind of volunteer positions are available?

Each Mercy Health facility has a different volunteer need. Examples of positions/needs that may be available for volunteers include: clerk, greeter, menu aide, aide, inventory, sales, scanner, physical labor, messenger, patient partner, rounding, transporter and driver. This list is not exhaustive, as each facility has its own unique needs that vary during different times of the year.

Why do you need a social security number?

This information may be used for background checks and to verify your identity. This information is not recorded in a database and is not shared with anyone. At Mercy Health, maintaining privacy and confidentiality for our patients, staff and volunteers is a priority.

What is the purpose of the Health Clearance Form? Is this information mandatory to volunteer?

Yes, a Health Clearance Form is used to ensure volunteering in a hospital setting will not compromise your health. It is important to know you are in good physical and mental health, and you do not have any infectious disease. It is our goal to keep our volunteers, our patients, and our staff in a safe and healthy environment.

Who should I list as a personal reference?

You may list friends, neighbors, members of church or social groups you belong to, a former or present teacher or anyone who can provide a reference to your character and suitability as a volunteer in a healthcare setting. Relatives may not be used as personal references.

Why do you need an emergency name and contact?

In the event something happens to you while you are on your volunteer shift, we need to be able to reach someone on your behalf.

Are volunteers obligated to follow the same hospital policies as employees?

Yes, volunteers are obligated to follow the same hospital policies, mission statement, values and promise as employees. This includes, but is not limited to: dress code, confidentiality policies, sexual harassment policies, policies regarding conduct and other hospital standards. Volunteers must wear their name badges at all times while they are volunteering.

Does every volunteer applicant automatically get a volunteer position?

No. Multiple applications are considered for volunteer position openings. After references and background checks are complete, the Director of Volunteer Services reviews all completed applications for content and interests and will choose candidates for interview accordingly.
